Artist Statement
'Human Nature', my latest series, was created over a ten year period. In it I represent familiar narratives from the Old and the New Testaments, against the backdrops of more contemporary scenes.
Recreating the actual narratives is not what I am after. Instead, I choose specific parts from the stories to bring about a new story. Those parts reflect our nature, which in my view hasn’t fundamentally changed.
Through carefully setting up scenes made of familiar objects and cultural themes, I create a tableau form. Within that form, which might appear minimalistic, I set those
objects as laconic, economic components, where they function as placeholders for people, who are not there.
Elements borrowed from pop-culture and familiar 1950s American design, such as that of the Diner culture, are placed in vacant spaces, representing the current state of the American Dream.
The paintings tell a story of the vacancy of our present-day culture. The absence of the human body becomes a constant reminder of the aftermath of the actions it perpetrates.
